10 Questions With Véyah on Her New Single “Better Than The Boys” [Q&A]

Our ears perked up when we first heard about Indian-born, NYC-based artist Véyah, especially when we learned how talented this 18-year-old rising star is. Wanting to learn more about this Jay Sean mentored act, we reached out to this emerging South Asian pop talent to learn more about her and her new single "Better Than The Boys."

Ones To Watch: Who is Veyah?

Veyah: I don’t have some deep philosophical answer, to be honest. I’m an 18-year-old who’s still figuring out who I am and how to navigate my life just like everyone else my age, who just also happens to love making music to connect with myself and everyone around me.

Besides the obvious, what is "Better Than The Boys" all about?

Aside from the obvious experience, "Better Than The Boys," to me, is the creative expression of a topic that gets hidden and also shamed in the South Asian community, an issue that deserves more light and freedom and I think that’s so important.

You only have a few songs out, how do you feel you are settling into your sound?

Every time I make a song, I feel like a new person because it’s different from the day before. But until I do put my finger on it, I’m just having fun along the way.

Any collaborators on the track?

I wrote "Better Than The Boys" with the tremendously talented Lauren and Joshua Murty (who produced it). I wouldn’t really find the right words to describe how great they are anyway. The song speaks for itself.

Did you feel more comfortable on this more driving, less ballad tempo of a song?

I love making music that sits in the space that "Better Than The Boys" sits in of course. But, I’m also starting to find my bag in the ballad space and enjoying being more vulnerable with myself and my audience. I wanna do more of that.

Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?

I can’t tell you what to expect yet because I’m not even really sure. I have so much to learn and figure out about myself so I surprise myself all the time. I just want you guys to have the same reaction to whatever I put out next.

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

I have so much in the vault that I’m excited to share, but, I think the most important thing to be on the lookout for is growth. My favorite thing about my work is how my audience—my family—continues to discover themselves along with me.

What’s inspiring you right now outside of music?

I’m seven months into my move to LA and it’s been so wonderful. Finding my sense of community and meeting new people to have new experiences with has been super eye-opening and inspiring in and out of the studio.

Best-kept NYC food secret?

I get yelled at all the time because of this, but I actually don’t have too much experience with signature NYC staples like the pizza or bagels. Having grown up right outside the city, in Jersey, it’s a bit hilarious that I haven’t been through all that… I wanna know the secret too but I’m too scared to ask a New Yorker.

Who are your Ones To Watch?

I’m a bit biased because I was on the train all the way from back when she was posting on YouTube, but Tate McRae is such an icon. She’s climbing the ladder like no other. I LOVE watching her grow and live her best life making her best art.
