After receiving the golden buzzer from Howie Mandell on America's Got Talent, Grace VanderWaal has only continued to capture hearts since. With a soulful yet sweet voice, ukulele accompaniment, and lyrics that demonstrate understanding beyond her years, it seems that VanderWaal was destined to become a singer from a young age—she began composing her first songs at a mere three years old. As she grew older, she continued to write original songs, learned the ukulele, and upload covers to her YouTube channel. But it was an original song, "I Don't Know My Name," that earned her the golden buzzer on America's Got Talent when she was just 12 years old.
In early 2017, VanderWaal began working on her debut album, Just the Beginning, which was to represent her signature acoustic sound while still exploring different production. The album was released on Nov. 3, 2017, and debuted at number 22 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. She embarked on her sold out, first solo tour just a few days later. Aside from winning first place on America's Got Talent, the young singer has accomplished much. Billboard magazine named VanderWaal to its 2016 21 Under 21 list of “music’s hottest young stars,” and she won the 2017 Radio Disney Music Award for Best New Artist as well as a 2017 Teen Choice Award. Fender named VanderWaal its youngest Signature Series artist ever, and their collaboration ukulele is expected to be released in 2018. VanderWaal is also poised to receive Billboard’s 2017 Women in Music Rising Star Award.
