This week, Canadian duo Majid Jordan released their new EP A Place Like This, the followup to their 2013 debut afterhours. We think this warrants an update on the team.
It doesn’t hurt to be properly introduced to the world on 2013’s biggest hit, Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” The sensitive rapper forwent the rhymes and sang his pleas over a retro mid-tempo beat that felt equal parts revival disco and modern R&B. The behemoth track had split credit, half owed to an artist named Majid Jordan.
First things first, Majid Jordan is not a singular; it’s a duo. The Toronto pair comprises producers Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, who collectively have also hidden under the alias Good People on SoundCloud. They’ve remained relatively anonymous and entirely mysterious (their Good People handle has fewer than 1000 followers on SoundCloud) and a concerted Google search would not yield many results other than speculation, curiosity and anticipation—especially since fellow Canadian Drake signed them to his OVO Sound record label.
Majid Jordan released their first EP, afterhours, in August of 2013 and followed up with their second, A Place Like This, in late July 2014. Al Maskati is the man behind the catchy vocal runs and high notes on “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” and similarly lends his dulcet voice in each of the duo’s songs. Combined with the finesse of Ullman’s production, Majid Jordan’s quiet hype shouldn’t remain so much longer.
