As we approach the universal celebration of love known as Valentine’s Day, it’s important to remember that love comes in many different forms. While traditional beliefs and Disney fairytales have set unrealistic expectations of what love should be, a relationship is fully dependent on the individuals it encompasses. That message comes across loud and clear in Dot (Kate Ellwanger) and JNTHN STEIN’s new “Modern Romance” music video, a raw and accurate observation of various types of romantic relationships.
The visual takes us on a ride with four couples as they interact in one of the most intimate settings in modern Los Angeles: the back of an Uber car. Within the first minute, it becomes clear that we’re witnessing four extremely different synergies: lustful excitement, dwindling attentiveness, aggressive tension, and silly flirtation. Such impressions are gathered from one particular perspective of the video, but as mentioned before, it’s simply impossible to label a relationship unless you’re in it. As Dot shared with us,
“The original concept for this video was brought to me by the directors, Molly Gale and Jancarlo Beck (aka Sleepy Puppies). I loved their idea of showing a wide range of modern relationships from the back seat of an Uber driving around in Los Angeles. The simplicity of the production allowed the subtle emotional dynamics of each couple to be the main focus of the video, and it was the perfect visual context for this song.”
Dot is a singer, songwriter, and producer who has made a name for herself with her dreamy indie electronica and ’60s-inspired beats, as well as her role as the CEO of Unspeakable Records (all-female label) and as a member of Team Supreme (L.A. beat collective). When she’s not performing at Low End Theory, The Echoplex, The Observatory, Ace Hotel, and more, Dot is busy producing for artists like SZA and writing original music for film/TV. “Modern Romance” is a sensual display of Dot’s soothing vocals, appropriately paired with classically-trained JNTHN STEIN’s artfully sweeping production.
