23-year-old Norwegian artist Debrah Scarlett has just revealed “Cynical Youth,” the first single from her upcoming debut EP, DYS(U)TOPIA. Scarlett’s gorgeous, icy vocals and uplifting transcendental pop trigger comparisons to acts like Aurora, Birdy, and London Grammar.
“Cynical Youth” is an ode to traveling at a young age, growing up in between places, and never quite belonging anywhere. The soft drums and soaring melodies draw magic to the track’s lyricism.
Born in Switzerland, Scarlett is the daughter to a Norwegian mother and a Swiss-Italian father. Scarlet moved to Norway when she was seven, only to head back to Switzerland for her teenage years, before returning to Norway once again in 2014.
“I think a lot of people get very confused when they ask where and when I’ve lived here and there. I’ve kind of been like a yo-yo, moving back and forth,” she says of her youth. Scarlett felt, as she explains, “like an alien, different from those around me.” As she became exposed to several languages so quickly, music became her universal language of expression. “It enabled to truly express myself,” she shared.
