Citizen Shine On Driving Anthem "Hyper Trophy" | THE NOISE

Citizen keeps doling out the bangers with the release of their latest new track, “Hyper Trophy." The anthemic jam is the second offering from their forthcoming fifth album Calling The Dogs, due October 6, and sees the building on the dance-punk/post-punk vibe that cropped up on the last record, Life In Your Glass World.

The high-octane single starts with a groovy guitar riff before jumping headfirst into a driving drum beat, presenting itself as the perfect song for a workout, running, or driving in your car with the windows down and the volume cranked all the way up. Singer Mat Kerekes's robust vocals shine on the track amid the intensifying sonics full of crashing percussion and angsty guitar riffs. On the explosive chorus, he belts, "You’re bright and bold, I can’t go on/ And though you followed me into the mud, it’s not enough," later admitting that they used to be so passionate but feel themselves fading out and unable to keep up.

"Sometimes, though you are trying hard to accomplish something, it can't be done, says singer Mat Kerekes. "This song is about a relentless pursuit of an objective, but still failing – which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you find something you love and pour everything you have into that, I find that admirable regardless of the outcome."

The accompanying music video, directed by guitarist Mason Mercer, finds the band in the midst of an undefined search. The visual, partly shot in night-vision, intercut scenes of the band rocking out in a remote desert landscape, with footage of the group running through the hills on a heated quest for some unknowable goal.

On the making of the video, guitarist Mason Mercer shares: "Using infrared and thermal imaging, we filmed on a pitch black desert ranch in SoCal in the middle of the night wrapping at 4am… We couldn't see anything, but the camera could see everything. Our themes were kept purposefully ambiguous and left simply at 'pursuit' and 'mission.'"

"Hyper Trophy" follows the band's last single, "If You're Lonely," which served as a compelling introduction to Citizen's forthcoming LP Calling The Dogs. The album is the band's most poignant body of work yet, as the record addresses themes of self-reflection, personal growth, and resilience. On Calling The Dogs, the band's passionate songwriting and styling shine while stripped back to what they do best: guitar-driven indie rock. Citizen is set to head out on a headlining tour of North America, kicking off October 6 and running through late November. The band will also embark overseas starting on February 6 at St Luke's Church, Glasgow.
