Housewife Is Absolutely Thriving in Their "Fuck Around Phase"

Not knowing when to start, when to stop, and not caring one way or another can be messy, especially for someone naturally serious and structured. For the deeply perspicuous and talented singer-songwriter Housewife, née Brighid Fry, relinquishing their typical demeanor is a blessing for us, as it unravels into a flirtatious, drunken singalong bluntly described as "Fuck Around Phase."

A prodigious talent, they have been writing and recording since their teenage years, culminating in a record contract and professional status right as the pandemic took hold. Taking the absence of live shows and distractions as an incentive, they doubled down on their input, maturing their craft into something less participatory and more purposeful. Surrounded by trusted collaborators, specifically co-writer and producer Gabe Simon as well as Savana Santos, Housewife has ramped up their conspicuous talent with gravitational purpose.

Housewife grew up in a household where “words are important,” the progeny of a poet father and a grandfather who was a writer, and that legacy of narration and lyricism is readily apparent in their song constriction. A keen sense of timing, plot, and emotive reveals, all punctuated within the structure of a pop song, exemplify their nuanced faculty for story, especially stories you feel included in.

The sensation of being cast into a Housewife song resonates particularly in "Fuck Around Phase," a song where it is hard not to feel adjacent to Brighid on a Tuesday night or the next day at the kitchen table, a snow globe of visuals that shake with each chord, shimmering with each riff. It sounds fun, feels fun, and while we don’t wish drinking and excess as a daily shift from knitting with cats, we love the lubricated poetic results. Directionally, one hopes Housewife finds their balance and keeps this sonic equilibrium, staying true to their nuance, love of words, and identity, but please keep this fuck around phase rolling, as we can’t stop listening to the results.
