Imagine going to bed as a regular 14-year-old girl and waking up the next morning with your inbox flooded with emails inquiring about your music career. That's what happened to pop sensation Billie Eilish who, in 2015, snared millions of listeners with her wistful debut single "Ocean Eyes."
Now, the 15-year-old vocalist is back with her third single, and it's proof that she's the real deal. "Bellyache" was produced by Eilish's older brother, 19-year-old Finneas O'Connell, in their Los Angles home. She's drawn comparisons to Lana Del Rey and Lorde in the past, but "Bellyache" leans towards the more unconventional sounds of pop superstar MØ. You may think that you have the track all figured out during the first minute and a half, with its simple acoustic guitar, melodic percussion, and dreamy vocals, but don't be fooled.
The single is darker than it first appears, as Eilish takes on the persona of a psychopath who's killed her friends and dumped their bodies in the backseat of her car. "Where's my mind?" she chants before the chorus kicks in with an uplifting tempo, answering "Maybe it's in the gutter/Where I left my lover." She expanded,
"When I write, I try to become different characters. You can write a song about being in love with someone, but you don't have to be in love with anyone. You can write a song about killing someone, but you don't have to have killed people. 'Bellyache' is about doing one of those things, but it's mostly about regret and guilt. Becoming a character can be really fun; to put yourself in a place you would never really be."
At the ripe age of 15, the L.A. native has managed to rack up well over 40 million streams on Spotify alone, with just two singles and their accompanying remixes under her belt. "Bellyache" is sure to live up to the impressive reputation the young artist has already set for herself.
