Corey Smith's Movin On Up Tour Kickoff

Last night, Corey Smith kicked off the first night of his Movin' On Up Tour at the House of Blues in Hollywood. The progressive country singer, who has spent the last few months putting the finishing touches on his new album, was more than eager to return to the stage.

"I'm a different person I was than when I was starting out. It's fresh, it's exciting," Smith told Ones To Watch before the show. In the back of the House of Blues' Foundation Room, Smith blends in as well as any local Angelean - an incognito television producer maybe - that is, until you notice his towering frame sprouting up from a pair of impressively subtle cowboy boots.

For Smith, who funded and self-produced eight albums to date, his forthcoming album, due out in early 2014, will differ from previous ones by dealing largely with changes the singer has undergone in the last two years.

"I find myself writing about a lot of the same things, but as I grow and have more experience, I'm able to explore the theme in a different way or deeper way. But you know, a lot of the time it's just about human nature and not being the person that I want to be - and that struggle to always get better," he said.

The songs are inspired by his own life and people around him, with themes dealing in topics like drinking and people struggling with alcohol problems.

"There's a song on there called 'Bend' and a song called 'Flip Flop.'  There are a lot of references on the album about being flexible and learning how to bend. In general, how to go with the flow, how to let go and when to let go," Smith said, citing songwriters like Paul Simon, John Mayer and Merle Haggard as influences on the transparency listeners can expect to hear on the record.

"Lennon said that he thought of his songs as one piece of work, collectively. And if you listen to that piece of work, you'll understand what it was like to be a man coming up when he came up and the struggles he went through. It's what it's all about."
