Giving new meaning to the term “double threat,” Cosmo’s Midnight is made up of Australian twins Cosmo and Patrick Liney. With names like that, it seems they were destined for greatness, and they have delivered just that. Their debut album, What Comes Next, is a feast of electronic tracks with funky R&B twists, featuring a slew of popular artists including Tove Styrke, Winston Surfshirt, Woodes, Boogie, Buddy and Jay Prince.
This is their first full length album, but the duo has been around since 2013, releasing a handful of killer singles as well as their Moments EP. They’ve remixed for AlunaGeorge and GoldLink to name a few, but their originals are what’s really noteworthy. The quality of every single track on What Comes Next is impressive, as there are no weak links in the mix.
The album starts off with “Confidence,” a sultry track graced with Woodes’ vocals. It’s got a familiar melody that’s easy to sing along with which allows the expertly crafted production to shine through. “Get To Know” is a chill song with playful sound effects and Anderson .Paak inspired vocals. “Where U Been” featuring Boogie is more of an intense track, but has a light driving beat that makes it easy to listen to.
Another standout is “History,” which amassed over 12 million streams on Spotify within a month, and details the complications of a relationship shrouded in past experiences, complicating the desire for a casual encounter. Impressively emotive female vocals confess “We got too much history, to wake up in my bed with you lying next to me,” which is an unfortunate feeling many can relate to. The transitions throughout the album are expertly done with crisp sounds, bubbling synths and pop drum fills. Every track is worth a listen, and with such a wide a variety of subject matter and feel, there’s truly a song for everyone. The album comes to a close with “Lovelight” a simmering track with silky smooth vocals that skip along the top.
This album is perfect for summer car rides and guarantee good vibes wherever you play it. Upon high demand, Cosmo’s Midnight is kicking off their summer tour across Australia this July, which features a poppin’ new live show. What comes next for these brothers is going to be big.
