In a matter of a few short days, San Diego’s Waterfront Park will be transformed into an electronic-scored wonderland. Sept. 29–30 marks the return of the bi-annual CRSSD Festival for a weekend of sun-soaked dance music revelry. The festival has quickly become a staple not only in its city of origin but as a must-attend festival for any electronic music lover. Showcasing the vast diversity of today’s current electronic landscape, CRSSD hosts acts that run the gamut from underground house and techno to radio-loved producers.
In anticipation of our growing anticipation for the return of CRSSD, we decided to count down the days until this weekend by checking in with a few of our favorite acts slated to play the festival this year. The first act we had the pleasure of catching up with was Autograf, a mesmerizing electronic trio whose futuristic take on electronica sets them far apart from their peers. So join the journey as Autograf takes us the behind-the-scenes on a part of their journey that led to CRSSD, from playing a festival in Thailand to returning to their home in Chicago for a standout set at this year’s Lollapalooza.
This summer has been amazing and we can’t wait to close it out at CRSSD, but one of the highlights so far this year has been going from playing an island festival in Thailand while celebrating Louis’ birthday to coming back to the city we started in, Chicago, and doing Lollapalooza.
The food in Thailand is some of our favorite in the world so one of the first days on the island, we all enjoyed lunch together at the beach. Shout to Jack our photographer who was with us and you can see piloting the drone to get this shot.
The next night we played the beach festival and after we were done with our live set, decided to keep DJing for another hour or two while people climbed up on stage to party with us. That “Thank You” sign was them trying to drop the hint that we needed to stop before they got a noise violation.
Between the culture and friends we have made in Thailand, it’s always one of our favorite countries to visit. So much so that we even co-opened a gallery with our friend Nick who Louis is giving a big hug to here.
The next day we chilled out poolside and got drunk off of piña coladas while we recovered from the night before.
We ended up renting motorbikes for our duration on the island and rode them along the beach. The perfect way to sightsee!
That night we found the best cafe that made coconut lattes that we enjoyed while watching the sunset over the water.
Another epic meal by the beach going in on a ton of seafood.
Heading to a night market to grab some street food. Loaded up on a noodle dish, grilled squid, crispy pork, and Nutella banana crepes.
Checking out from the hotel getting ready to head back to Bangkok.
Visiting one of the many temples we got to see while back in the city.
Couldn’t say no to a picture with Pikachu.
Our photographer, Jack, ended up linking with some local photographers in Bangkok who took us to this abandoned rooftop our last day there. Can’t say where this was but we had to sneak into a condo building where we took an elevator up as far as it could go before jumping on the fire escape and walking up another dozen floors to get on the roof.
Back in Chicago where we practiced in Mikul’s mom’s basement for a week before we had 3 nonstop days of shows starting with this private boat party we DJed for Soundbox.
Next day Vertiport hooked us up with a helicopter ride over the festival, arriving in style.
Want to give a big shout out to these 2 guys here Jack and James who we have gotten to know over the years and are always there to help capture our lives. Without them and all the other amazing photographers we have gotten to know, I don’t even know if I would remember half the stuff we have done with how fast things are always moving.
Dropping a DJ set in the Toyota Music Den early in the day before our live set.
Playing live at Lollapalooza this was a huge milestone for us! Being we started this project in Chicago, doing not-so-legal loft parties to playing at the biggest festival in the city meant so much to us.
Taking it all in after walking around the festival once it was closed down and they started to break down the stages.
Make sure to keep an eye peeled on our Instagram this Saturday, Sept. 29 for Autograf’s Instagram takeover live from CRSSD.
