Calling all ‘90s babies! Can you name a song that yields a greater universally comforting and nostalgic reaction than Friends’ theme song, “I’ll Be There For You?” We’ll wait…
From the consoling lyrics to the natural association with one of the greatest television series of our time, The Rembrandt’s “I’ll Be There For You” carries a powerful essence that transcends the boundaries of time and space. Today, Canadian “garage pop” duo K.I.D breathe new life into the evocative theme song with a cover that transforms an alternative ‘90s anthem into an atmospheric work of modern art.
Like the rest of us, Kara and Bobby of K.I.D maintain turned to Friends for comedic relief during some of their darker days, commenting,
“While recording our album, we were renting a very crack-den-esque studio apartment in Miracle Mile. To paint an even clearer picture of our then quality of life, we lived next door to a prostitute named Chocolate. There were many nights where we felt discouraged, anxious, and uncertain of our futures. In our lowest moments, we felt comforted watching Monica, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Chandler, the cast of ‘Friends.’ To honor the gifts of laughter and peace-of-mind they bestowed upon us, we recorded a cover of the infamous 'Friends’ theme song by The Rembrandts.”
In true K.I.D fashion, Kara’s sweet vocals conceal a tortured inner struggle that is only alleviated by, you guessed it: friends. While the theme song may have received a major sonic facelift, the themes still carry through from 1994 to today. The duo shared,
“We gave it a dark K.I.D digital twist, reflective of the pain we’ve endured while chasing our dreams. Like 'Friends’, K.I.D is all about friendship, life’s truest bond, it’s held this band together and given us both the safety to always be vulnerable with each-other when creating our music.”
