London-based artist Belle Mt. lets honest emotion flow freely through his new song, “Loving You,” premiering on Ones To Watch ahead of tomorrow’s official release via LV Music. Spoken as “Bell-Mont,” this latest project from singer-songwriter Matt Belmont is unveiling his folk-leaning, acoustic yet cinematic sound one track at a time.

Withdrawing from the public eye from 2014 to 2016 for a two-year introspective songwriting period, his fresh iteration of artistic expression, Belle Mt., was born. Culminating in a 10 day retreat into the foothills of the French Alps, in a makeshift studio at a friend’s unfinished family house, this is where Belmont’s creativity flourished, as wild and natural as the beautiful, stark wilderness surrounding him.

Production-wise, he began to experiment with more dramatic, ambient soundscapes to complement his poetic lyricism and acoustic-driven writing. During this secluded hideaway, eight tracks were written and demoed - including his soon-to-be lead track & first single released under the new Belle Mt. moniker, “Hollow.” His incredibly driving and moving Mahogany live session “Hollow” video is well-worth a watch, garnering over 100,000 views since its September release.

Moving forward with his newly crafted tunes, Belmont developed a partnership with the Grammy-winning producer Femke Weidema out of Nashville. As the LV Music label owner, she is also well-known for her collaborations with the renowned film composer Hans Zimmer. Drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Leonard Cohen, Fleetwood Mac, Ray Lamontagne, to modern-day artists like Coldplay and Bon Iver, the Belle Mt. project is already proving itself to be eloquently mature and pensive.

Intimately singing to his “Darling,” Belmont beautifully expresses the power their bond holds over his life: “Loving you / Blinds the senses / Reveals my inexperience / Oh, I can’t even help myself / So how do I handle someone else? / It’s loving you / That takes me higher / The only thing that keeps the fire.” As guitar strums keeps us locked in a steady, pulsing rhythm, we are gently guided into a hazy, dreamy atmosphere of ever-building, passionate emotion, all grounded by Belmont’s piercing, present voice.

Matt was kind enough to reveal his experiences leading up to the night that “Loving You” was born:

“I wrote ‘Loving You’ in the early hours of the morning during a bad case of insomnia post-argument. My girlfriend was able to sleep through anything including an unresolved argument, but those kinds of things can keep me up all night and drive me crazy if I have no outlet, so I picked up my guitar to play around with some chords I’d had for weeks and to try to move past the things which were looping on repeat in my head.

The lyrics of the song represent what I wished I’d had the courage to say in the heat of the moment. It’s a song about human relationships, love, turmoil and an admission that sometimes life hits us with emotional choices for which our actions carry a lot of weight of consequence. One of my most profound realizations was that we’re all just making it up as we go along and sometimes we fuck up by taking things for granted or saying things we instantly regret. The line ‘I can’t even help myself, so how do I handle someone else’ is a reflection on adulthood and the responsibility that comes with it; it’s definitely one of the most honest [songs] I’ve ever written.”

As seen in the Mahogany Session video for their debut song, live Belle Mt. shows are performed by a trio of musicians, including Matt himself on vocals/guitar/piano, Ben Worsley playing electric guitar/bass/synth/harmonies, and Chris Burgess on drum/pads/harmonies. As we patiently await more releases from the inspired Belle Mt. project, we can only hope that more live performances are on the horizon as well.
