There are plenty of ways to get over someone – listening to sad songs in the dark, a quick rebound, years of therapy. Despite all that, rising rapper Joji makes a compelling argument in his music video for “CAN’T GET OVER YOU” that the best way is through completely reinventing yourself, face tattoos and all. The project of Osaka, Japan-born singer and producer George Miller, Joji’s recent explorations have seen him venturing out towards his long-awaited debut album BALLADS 1.
While BALLADS 1 does not arrive until Oct. 26 via 88rising, “CAN’T GET OVER YOU,” coupled with the previously released macabre single, is more than enough for fans to satiate over until release day. “CAN’T GET OVER YOU” is, in typical Joji fashion, rife with unexpected moments from a thematic, sonic, and visual perspective. Providing his distinctive twist on the tried-and-true “my lover doesn’t love me” song, Joji takes rejection about as well as one would expect a meme-worthy internet icon to take it.
Linking up with esteemed producer Clams Casino, who has notably worked alongside the likes of Lil B, the two artists give rejection a sickeningly sweet sound. Underscored by Joji’s pitched-up vocals and a bubbly beat, the production juxtaposes the darker lyrical elements of “CAN’T GET OVER YOU.” The baser themes relating to obsession and possession come through in lines like “If I can’t have you, no one can” and “Tell me more, I got a boxcutter with your name on it.” While this shocking disconnect between the lyrics and underlying context would cause most projects to fall flat or feel disjointed, Joji is quickly making a career out of it.
The video itself, outside of a shocking breakdown that results in a Joji with a shaven head and numerous face tattoos, is the sort of thing that the internet dreams of. From slapping ice cream out of a kid’s hands, making rollerblading look as cool as it actually is, to parading a Keyblade like it’s a bottle of Dom Perignon, “CAN’T GET OVER YOU” is just over two minutes of Joji doing exactly what he does best–transforming the typically melancholic to something nothing short of enchanting.
