Budding LA-based duo LEAN may have released their vivacious debut LP, Years, just this past spring, but the best friends are already back at it with their lush new single, "Head In The Clouds." On this latest track, bandmates Kyle McCammon and Stephen Johnson look wisely at their inner and outer surroundings for something deliciously authentic in the landscape of indie rock. The pair find themselves at the juncture of where shrilling guitars pass through incandescent melodies and this prime location can only be described as glorious.
Imbued with razor sharp lyrics that deep dives into personal chaos, LEAN is not only expansive in their arrangements, but their storytelling abilities shine effortlessly as well. Just like many of the tracks found on their richly crafted debut album, "Head In The Clouds" flows smoothly, flickering between emotionally inspiring moments and breezy cadences that you can't help but tap your toes and bob your head to. With all the components for a flawless summer-to-fall transition, the mid-tempo track is a four-minute glimpse into indie-pop heaven and frankly; where else would you rather be?
On the surface "Head In The Clouds" sounds playful and purely infectious, but vocalist Stephen Johnson shared a deeper meaning behind the song with Ones To Watch,
"Around 1% of the population are sociopaths, so that means you definitely know one. I knew one too well, and I found out a little later than I probably should have that the best thing for me to do was to just get the hell out of the way and let them stay on their own fucked up trajectory."
McCammon and Johnson met in late 2016 and formed LEAN shortly afterward. After a series of singles, the twosome released their introduction record, Years, in May 2018. It features the title track and "Come Back," and those songs combined have over 1 million streams on Spotify. Still in their primitive years, LEAN was a band to watch for this year, and 2019 will solidify this even more as they look to release their forthcoming EP at the beginning of next year. Meanwhile, if you're in the Los Angeles area this weekend, catch LEAN on Nov. 3 at the Bootleg Theater.
