I’ve been making art since I was a kid, and I’m still making art as a kid…such a simple yet particularly telling look into the mind of our favorite mystery man, Michl.
After we covered his first three, pleasurably painful tracks, “Kill Our Way To Heaven,” “When You Loved Me Least,” and “Die Trying” in a recent feature, Michl decided to give us a little bit of insight into the man behind the mask. We were incredibly eager to learn about the elusive artist’s creative process, ultimate goal as a musician, and his top Ones To Watch artists. Plus, he even revealed a tiny sliver of personal background–progress!
In all seriousness, we love Michl’s music regardless of the identity behind it. Stay tuned for more to come from Michl this summer!
First thing’s first—you’ve only released 3 songs so far and they’re all amazing, but the lyrics are all incredibly raw and frankly, very depressing. Why’d you choose to go in such a dark direction?
I don’t feel like the lyrics are depressing at all. They might be unsettling, but not depressing. I’m at a point where I question everything and have answers to nothing, and the result is what you hear.
Are the lyrics related to real-life experience and if so, do you mind sharing?
I don’t ever write about something that I haven’t experienced.
Assuming fans must connect with your songs on a very emotional level, what have been some standout reactions?
I put so much of myself in every word I write, so its been beautiful to see people connect with a pre-chorus or a bridge or a verse lyric. The chorus gets the most attention, but its most rewarding to see people really dive into the whole song.
Your debut track, “Kill Our Way To Heaven” seemed to attract tons of fans almost immediately. To what do you attribute that rapid success?
I’m not sure. I’d like to think its the weight of the lyrics. It’s not the easiest song to digest but I feel like when you do, we connect on a different level.
What is the significance of the black & white face blurred out with that particular geometric design on all your tracks?
I’m in a state of change and reconstruction, and those images represent that to me.
There is very little personal information about you on the interwebs–care to share any personal details or do we expect full anonymity from Michl as you continue to release new music?
My name is Michl and I grew up in Riverside, CA. I’ve been making art since I was a kid, and I’m still making art as a kid. There, no more mysteriousness.
What can we expect from Michl in the coming months? New music? Plans to tour?
I want to release an EP, shooting for early summer. Will definitely tour, waiting for the right time.
What is the ultimate goal for the Michl project? Ten years from now when you look back, what do you want to be able to say you achieved through your music?
If I can make one person think, connect, question, feel, then I’m good.
Lastly, who are the top five artists on YOUR Ones To Watch list?
Don’t have 5, but been listening to a lot of Mura Masa.
