Conan Gray has come quite a way from his first YouTube video, “Let Me Introduce Myself.,” uploaded when he was a mere “fetus” in 2013. The perfect picture of fresh-faced creativity, Gray couldn’t possibly have known that from this initial vlog would grow a subscribing fanbase surpassing the millions.
Fast forward to 2018, at only 19 years young, you’ll find Gray proudly attending UCLA, selling out shows across America, and racking up streams on his original songs in the tens of millions – though this sparkling picture of success was not always the case for our budding star. Growing up in obscurity can be hard on its own but coming of age in the cyber limelight offers a slew of unique difficulties. Like many gifted artists, Gray’s adolescence wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows, especially in the small town of Georgetown, Texas, where he grew up. In many of his YouTube vlogs, he mentions the bullying he faced at the hands of his peers and internet trolls.
Yet Gray overcame this adversity by pouring his childhood torment into creative content for his YouTube channel, growing a community of likeminded supporters who saw the beauty in his artistry. An individual of many talents, Gray’s YouTube channel is diverse in content, ranging from personal vlogs such as monthly favs and quirky tutorials, conversational series such as “Art-Tea” where he drinks tea and shares his visual art, to his gorgeous covers. Though a joy to sift through his channel, it is his original bedroom-pop bangers that have been turning heads across the country and brought Gray to our attention.
His first release, “Idle Town,” began as a love song for an unrequited crush. After that love story didn’t come into fruition, the song became a tribute to the memories made with his friends during his senior year of high school in his small Texan town. Accompanied with an endearing video that would put a smile on a sociopath, the entire project is dripping with DIY charm. Equipped with Garageband and a cheap microphone taped to a lamp, Gray created the sensational track which would eventually garner him over 15 million streams on Spotify and over 11 million views on YouTube. Following that release came singles "Grow,“ "Generation Why,” and most recent single "Crush Culture.“ All of which are extremely personal and relatable, fostering an undeniably strong bond with his fans.
This bond is further exemplified by his fans’ dedication to supporting his live performance endeavors. Instantly selling out his first tour, Gray recently announced his North American tour in Spring 2019 beginning on March 10 at the Crocodile in Seattle, WA and hitting major markets across the country. Those who buy tickets to one of his tour dates will also receive an instant download of his debut EP Sunset Season, set for release on Nov. 16.
