Setlist.Fm's weekly "Who Is" series is an immersive way to expose readers to up-and-coming indie acts that should be on your radar; written by music fans for music fans. Each week we feature an artist and/or band that's making waves in the music world. The "Who Is" pieces are a tell-all of the artist, showcasing everything from music and performance style, to influences and tour dates.
Earlier this month we put the spotlight on Brooklyn-based indie rock band, Big Thief. You may have seen them on tour with The National this year as a part of the Sleep Well Beast tour, but who exactly is this Big Thief? The quartet dropped its first album, Masterpiece, in May 2016 and has taken off since. Almost constantly on the road since their debut release, Big Thief has made its way coast-to-coast throughout the U.S., to the U.K., to Europe (twice!) and has even traveled down under to Australia. They released their second album, Capacity, in June of 2017. The band’s sound is a mixture of indie, rock and folk (think: 21st Century Mazzy Star).
Lead singer Adrianne Lenker has a thing for names: in Capacity, she introduces listeners to a cast of characters, mostly women, who are vulnerable, raw and practically extensions of herself. Characters Haley, Mary, Lorraine, Paul and Randy all make appearances throughout the songs. Lenker uses these names as a universal lens to relate to the personal.
The band is currently wrapping up a tour that kicked off in May and runs through Oct. 25, with an appearance at Voodoo Music & Arts Festival in New Orleans the following weekend. See the last two tour dates below and head to Setlist.fm's WHO IS on Big Thief to learn more!
