New Music Tuesday: Jazz Having a Moment

JMSN - JMSN (Blue Album) 12/9 on WhiteRoom

Recent days have found L.A.-via-Detroit producer JMSN (born Christian Berishaj) collaborating with a number of crossover figures in the electronic and hip-hop worlds, including Freddie Gibbs, Kaytranada, and Ta-ku. Unsurprisingly, his forthcoming Blue Album is a case study in how and why these two musical realms should continue to give and take from one another. Get familiar with JMSN with his new single “Addicted.”

Coultrain - Side Effex of Make-Believe; divided for love’s sake

St. Louis native Aaron M. Frison (no relation to the late John Coltrane) dusts off the book of jazz for a fresh new envisioning. His experimental weaving of jazz, rhythm, and blues elements make way for a expansive sound that falls somewhere in between John Legend’s R&B-pop to Frank Ocean’s raw soul. His new EP, Side Effex of Make-Believe; divided for love’s sake is out on 12/21 on Fresh Selects. In the meantime, listen here

Charli XCX - Sucker

Nearly 3 months later than it was originally set to release, due to the success of a little single called “Boom Clap,” here’s a final reminder that London queen Charli XCX’s Sucker approaches at last. The album represents the pop culmination of Charli’s young career, which has throttled through the last fifty years of nostalgia-infused pop and not quite made up its mind. Which, to us, is not a bad thing at all. Hear her latest single “Gold Coins” here.

Marian Hill - Lips

Philly electronic duo Marian Hill have released their latest single “Lips.” Based off their Play EP out earlier this year, we’ve come to expect nothing less than jazzed out head nodders from these coolly collected hitmakers. Hear it above and pre-order the single here
