It's officially the 4th of July - a time for American-flag printed swimwear, beach barbecues, fireworks, and realizing it's a completely socially acceptable holiday to pass out at 5pm. Yet, more than anything, Independence Day has historically served as a celebration and commemoration of the founding of this country. And in a time where every day it feels we're moving further and further away from the ideals this country was founded upon, it gets harder to blindly celebrate such a holiday.
So, we here at Ones To Watch wanted to celebrate in a different way. We wanted to celebrate a fight towards a better America, an America we hope to see in the future. So, we had the politically-minded artist grandson craft a playlist of songs by artists who, like him, are using and have used their platform to speak out about injustice.
As grandson shared in an Instagram post,
I go onstage every night in front of hundreds of strangers and talk about the sort of society I believe in, one that recognizes systemic failure and transparently works to address those failures, one that holds elected officials accountable to serve us beyond empty promises on Election Day, one that tackles problems with a lens of inclusivity and recognizes the inherent beauty and significance of every soul. Not everybody agrees with me and my vision, but that's part of being human. It is their right to disagree as much as it is my right to talk my shit. But with all happening at the border, the inevitable shitstorm brewing in the Supreme Court, apathy or ambivalence have never been more destructive or dangerous. We have to fight for that vision"
