If you close your eyes while listening to Billy Raffoul, his gritty voice and guitar-strumming virtuoso will likely paint the picture of a well-seasoned rock & roll veteran. Upon deeper investigation, you might be surprised to learn that he is in fact a young newcomer with booming potential. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter has collaborated with Avicii and Kygo, toured with Kings of Leon and Judah & The Lion, written with Julia Michaels (Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony), and earned the production credits of Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Foals). All triumphs considered, you’ll be even more shocked to learn that Raffoul has yet to unveil a debut body of work.

As we patiently await his forthcoming EP, we can continue to enjoy an enticing sample serving of seven tracks – the latest of which is admittedly our favorite here at Ones To Watch. “I’m Not A Saint” was released on May 11, highlighting Raffoul’s knack for raw and sincere lyricism. The new single narrates an honest coming-to-terms with personal shortcomings in the context of a relationship – “a fair warning,” per se. Julia Michael gently harmonizes throughout the piece, contributing a subtle feminine air that allows both sexes to relate. Raffoul shared a personal anecdote on the opening line,

“The first time I got dumped I tried real hard to get addicted to cigarettes because I thought it was a cool look. I failed miserably and it lasted about a week. It Gave me the first line of this song though… So there’s that.“

The accompanying video portrays a passionate Billy Raffoul, belting each lyric in a form of confessional catharsis. Following suit to his previous live acoustic renditions, the “I’m Not A Saint” visual brings fans closer to Raffoul in the place where he thrives most of all: live.
