PREMIERE: YAS Debuts with the Sultry & Honest “Poison”

When classifying YAS (Yasmeen Al-Mazeedi) as an artist, it’s almost easier to list what she isn’t. A classically-trained violinist and vocalist, a songwriter, composer and arranger, YAS has dabbled in just about everything. When she’s not making music as YAS, she also does session work for major artists and producers like Alessia Cara, Desiigner, Mike Dean, Charlie Heat, and San Holo. Though she’s armed with endless talents, she’s recently shifted her focus toward her career as a singer-songwriter and the result is an an intimately atmospheric, modern R&B sound.

Her debut single “Poison” is dripping in flirtatious mystery as her hauntingly beautiful vocals tell a story of endings, new beginnings, and the coping mechanisms we use to help ourselves feel okay again. The dark production gives the emotional melody a pleasantly edgy feel and her brutal openness gives her that air of self-assured confidence. YAS’ array of talents and classical training are evident in how fine-tuned and carefully placed each note and each instrumental are. Her extensive training gives her a leg up over other rising artists, as she clearly knows how to explore the boundaries of music and present it in a fresh, new way.  YAS shared about the creation of “Poison,”

“‘Poison’ is a song about escape. It’s about using whatever you have in front of you to get over something, to get over someone. I ended a long distance relationship over the phone in February. The lack of closure made me feel like I didn’t get to say all that I wanted to say.

Sonically, I wanted to use darker sounding textures like the lead in the drop and the lower frequency instruments to represent that dark place that we are all intimately familiar with. The chorus I left bare with strings and vocal; I wanted that moment to feel stripped, raw, vulnerable and honest.”

Though many artists have the ability to produce a catchy tune, YAS’ capacity to harness vulnerable emotions and transform them into something real, yet daringly bold and original is undeniably impressive. “Poison” is a heavenly mashup of sweet meets sultry, and her syrupy vocals are just the icing on the cake. Don’t just take my word for it. Listen to her latest track below.
