2017 was a year for women: Dua Lipa shared her “New Rules” for dealing with heartbreak. Lorde delivered a Grammy nominated sophomore album nearly four and a half years after the release of her debut album, Pure Heroine. MUNA created an album full of anthems that give voice to the voiceless, and Billie Eilish proved that age is just a number.
We are ready to see another year full of women finding success in the industry, and one we’re particularly excited about is bülow, a 17-year-old singer from The Netherlands who recently released her debut EP, Damaged, VOL 1. We held a Q&A with the singer (named Megan Bülow)–see what she had to say about her music:
OTW: Can you describe your background with music? How long have you been singing?
I’ve been singing since as long as I can remember. It was only until I moved to England where I started to seriously think about having a future in it. I began busking when I was 11. I’ve always loved it.
OTW: You’re only 17-years-old. What’s your next move?
The next move is graduating from high school. When that’s done moving to Toronto and fully devoting my time to music.
OTW: What is your songwriting process?
I’ve found there’s some people I really enjoy writing with. Collaborating can put your mind into a space you didn’t think you could go before. It’s inspiring when you click with people in that way. But sometimes finding a quiet place by myself is the most satisfying. I find the best kind of writing happens when the weather is really shit.
OTW: How would you describe your sound in three words?
How about two? I’d like my sound to be described as honest and fun.
OTW: Which musicians have influenced your sound?
I listened to a lot of Amy Winehouse growing up, but my heart is with folk music. I live for it. So many amazing musicians have influenced my sound, like Daughter, Bon Iver, Amy Winehouse, Ben Howard, and Ed Sheeran.
OTW: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Why?
Frank Ocean is definitely one of them. Jaden Smith too, he just does his thing without caring about what others think and I like that. Also Childish Gambino, his sound is authentic and makes me feel like I’m dreaming… let’s say I was in the middle of an alien invasion or a zombie apocalypse, and the world was about to end. At first I’d be like “RUN!” but if Gambino’s music started playing I’d be so captivated I would even care what was going on. Even the zombies would be chill.
OTW: Who are your Ones to Watch?
I recently came across H.E.R’s music, I think she’s definitely someone to look out for, as well as Jalen Santoy’s music. Lil Xan also has a really distinct sound, looking forward to hearing what he does next with his music.
