A new Tash Sultana track is always exciting news. The Australian alt-pop singer-songwriter has made a name for herself in recent years with her velvety voice, incredible live performances and her affinity for poetic lyrics. Sultana is a remarkably talented vocalist, but her musical abilities are nothing short of astonishing. She can play over 15 instruments, and taught herself how to play most of them.
The response to her music, both digital and live, has been explosive in the past few years. Her 2016 single "Jungle" currently sits at almost 50 million streams on Spotify, and her single "Notion" isn't far behind with over 46 million. She has sold out shows around the world, most recently playing Outside Lands and Lollapalooza before setting off to tour around Europe.
Her most recent release, "Free Mind," is a smooth alt pop jam with laid back instrumentation and chill vocals. The single follows "Salvation," which is also a featured track from her forthcoming album Flow State. The melodic line is complex, but breezes through the track in a purposeful way, making it sound effortless despite its complexity. "Free Mind" is the kind of song that you shush someone for singing along to–covering it up for even a moment results in missing something magical. The dichotomy between the sound and the meaning of the song is striking, as the lyrics describe an uncomfortable internal struggle to achieve some peace of mind, and the track itself makes for easy listening. The chorus repeats the lyrics,
"When will my mind be free from all the chains that hold me?"
