Teyana Taylor is looking back into the storied history of hip-hop, soul, and R&B to craft the sound of the present day. The summer of 2018 saw the release K.T.S.E., an eight-song collection of transcendent R&B produced by Kanye West, including the standout single, "Gonna Love Me." The classic R&B evoking number is near perfection, and it was difficult to imagine Taylor outdoing herself anytime soon. Well, at least that was the case before she dropped the remix.
Released in November, the remix of "Gonna Love Me" is not your typical reimagining. You won't find a sudden drop or a sped-up tempo, but rather the remix enlists Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and Raekwon to harness the innate power of the original. And despite the powerhouse names of hip-hop that now share the track with Taylor, "Gonna Love Me (Remix)" never departs from its original sentimental touches. From its sample of The Delfonics' "I Gave to You" to Taylor's powerfully empathic vocals that call to mind Ms. Lauryn Hill, "Gonna Love Me (Remix)" is everything a phenomenal fusion of R&B should aspire to.
The praises for what is on display here could be sung for ages, and we have yet to even touch upon the spellbinding new music video. Directed by Taylor herself, and dedicated to the late Kim Porter, the video for "Gonna Love Me (Remix)" is the personification of hip-hop and R&B's love affair with the east coast. Depicting Ghost and Taylor as a couple going through relationship issues, the backdrop of the ensuing relationship breakdown is made up of the bodegas, rooftops, and underground parties of New York. From the outfits, camera angles, to every single element that makes up "Gonna Love Me (Remix)," Taylor and Wu-Tang demonstrate the timeless vibe they have on their hands.
