We had the honor of watching UK singer/songwriter Tom Walker sing his heart out at L.A.'s School Night a couple months ago, and his performance truly sealed the deal. The energy in the room was so palpable that you could visibly witness unplanned attenders (including ourselves) becoming loyal fans almost instantaneously.
Walker's accomplishments don't look too bad on paper either: his debut Blessings EP has garnered critical acclaim from tastemakers ranging from Pigeons & Planes to BBC Radio 1 and Beats 1. The tracks were all written by Tom Walker and produced by Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian), with Walker's commanding vocals taking front and center from start to finish.
Seeing as though Blessings has on repeat since its May 19 release, we thought we'd ask Walker for the meanings and inspirations behind some of his best lines. Read along as you listen to each of the five tracks below!
I'm busy playing FIFA, you all know I'm gonna beat ya.
"This is my favorite line because I'm actually terrible at FIFA, and everyone knows there is no way I'm beating them. That's basically why I put it in the song, to annoy my mates."
Cause I believe in karma, and you believe in drama, you should try a little harder.
"I love this line. I had a girlfriend growing up who had a bit of an evil streak; she used to lose the plot pretty easily, and I would be in the firing line. I’ll say no more about that. But it's true, it's nice to be nice, so don't be a dick because it will come back to haunt you at some point."
The world is going mad, you and I should hide away, I can't stand the TV screen.
"This is basically a reference to how depressing the news is. Every time I turn it on, it feels like the end of the world. I think most people can relate to that. It's nice to get some good news sometimes."
F**K IT! F**K IT! It's a disaster, they're never gonna give us what we're after.
"This is my middle finger to the politics of the world. Totally drags me down sometimes. I think a lot of young people feel frustrated by our apparent inability to make change sometimes. Like Brexit, the name is as infuriating as what actually happened, who comes up with this stuff?!"
"Just You & I"
Let's get drunk, I'll pour my heart out of my mouth, this year's been hard for us no doubt.
"I really dig this lyric, it's totally true to the situation the song is based on. You know when you have a few drinks with someone close to you and can finally open up about something that's been living under your skin for a while. It's a massive relief, and you always feel better afterwards. Don't lock stuff away; it's bad for your sanity."
