birthday is the moniker of 23-year-old Duran Visek, a multi-instrumentalist and a native of Oakland, California. Duran grew up surrounded by music, learning the drums from his father at the age of 10, starting his first band at 13, and performing in front of crowds for most of his life. In March 2015, he moved to Oakland where he created his best project to date, birthday. Today, we are exclusively premiering “No Fun,” the focus track from birthday’s forthcoming EP.
The inception of “No Fun” happened over the course of just a few minutes, after a session of freestyle writing. Combining spoken word, electrifying synth, and pounding bass, the track unpacks the trials and tribulations of being an up and coming artist in Los Angeles. Here’s what Duran had to say about the song:
“‘No Fun’ is kind of like rationalism vs. romanticism for living in the unknown. It walks you through a paranoid mindset in the digital age. It’s partially inspired by that ‘what’s it all for’ feeling that hits every now and then.”
