mxmtoon is the brainchild of 18-year-old Maia, a California Bay Area native who describes herself as “ANOTHER girl who sings and plays uke.” Among the factors that make her stand out from the myriad of ukulele-playing singers out there are her highly relatable lyrics and raw stripped-down vocals that make us want to laugh and cry along with her. Along with her comical self-deprecating YouTube videos that have garnered over three million views, mxmtoon’s songs strike a chord that makes us feel as if she’s the long lost best friend we’ve all been waiting for.
Writing her own lyrics and recording all of her music from the confines of her parents’ guest room, mxmtoon’s songs explore themes such as the trials of love, being a burden to those close to you, and connecting with your family’s heritage. Her recent release, “i feel like chet,” is an ode to 1950s jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. With stripped-down vocals and a folksy-pop melody, the track chronicles the trials and tribulations of a “hopeless romantic afraid of commitment.”
Following on the tails of her popular singles such as “Falling for U” and “feelings are fatal,” mxmtoon is set to unveil her debut EP this Friday, Dec. 7. She is also embarking on her first headlining tour across the United States in March 2019. Check out her tour dates below and grab your tickets here.
