Shot in one take, the American Millennial-directed video features Gallant desperately trying to escape from a car trunk. It’s not until the shot pans out that we see Jhené Aiko in the front seat, watching with piercing eyes from the rear-view mirror. Hold your breath for the end: Aiko steps out of the car, throws a lighter on the seat, and sets the car on fire.
As for the video, Gallant shared in a press release:
"I'm really into the whole one shot thing. Even just the way that I write, I really like living into a moment. Digging into all the subtext that that moment kind of carries. I thought that this particular scene would just very naturally, in a very subtly complex way, kind of just illustrate exactly all of the fiery emotions that are coming through lyrically in the song from both perspectives."
The R&B artists met through Red Bull Sound Select and have only performed the track together twice: in March at SXSW and April at the Coachella Music Festival. Jhené Aiko is scheduled to perform at the sold-out 2016 Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 days in LA on Nov. 21 at Avalon. Gallant is currently on his first headlining run, The Ology Tour, which will be wrapping up on Oct. 26 in Vancouver. You’ll have the chance to watch the artist’s Austin City Limits Music Festival performance this weekend on Red Bull TV.
Alas, we’re waiting for the day that the two perform the single live again. Until then, watch the video above for “Skipping Stones."
