Sundressed Just Wanna Be A “Winner” [Music Video Premiere] | The Noise

The Noise is Ones to Watch's home for all things punk, hardcore, metal, emo, you name it.

Arizona indie punk band Sundressed examine the inevitable tossing, turning, and sleepless nights amid uncertain times on their latest single and music video, "Winner." The single, released on the ten-year anniversary of the project's formation, is an aspirational track that speaks to the band's mission of creating music that tackles mental health issues for others to take solace in.

"Sundressed" highlights Hedges's confessional lyric style and the band's punk-infused melodies. Throughout the song, Hedges laments wanting to be remembered for something, expressing that he doesn't "wanna be the guy at Casey's on a Thursday" and doesn't "wanna be another name you've heard in passing."

The vulnerable verses build into a bold chorus with headbang-inducing percussion and catchy guitar riffs. Hedges admits that although he's bitter and feels like giving up on most days, he'll see his dream through until the very end so that he knows what it's like "to be a winner." The addition of sonics from DC’s You, Me, and Everyone We Know gives the single an added layer of dimension, especially on the anthemic final chorus.

The accompanying music video, directed by Chase Warren, opens with Hedges taking out the trash and failing to light a cigarette. Viewers then watch him as he journeys through Pheonix on his bicycle, reminiscing on the past and hoping for a fulfilling future. He stops at well-known places in the Pheonix music scene, including Zia Records, where he finds an old Sundressed poster, tears it off the wall, and crumples it into his back pocket.

Footage of the band performing the single and the crowd singing along intercuts the rest of the music video as Hedges makes his last stops on his bike ride through the city, ending with him walking into Crescent Ballroom. "This song came out right on our ten-year anniversary, so we wanted the video to be a little nostalgic," said Hedges. "It was super fun to go around to our old stomping grounds and relive the past decade. It really feels like it's only the beginning!"
