ALEXSUCKS Lose Control in the Infectious "Hate Me If You Want"

It’s been a bit over a year since rising LA alt-rock band ALEXSUCKS sold out the Roxy. Since then, they’ve embarked on a US tour celebrating the release of their debut album, The Gutter. Their phoenix-like rise has been inspiring to say the least. From inviting fans to be a part of their music videos to making every show an unforgettable and inclusive experience, this is a band that wants to take you along for the ride. Their sultry new single “Hate Me If You Want” proves that you don’t have to be an asshole to not care what people think of you.

Even before its release, the short social teasers that boasted a catastrophically infectious riff had “Hate Me If You Want” stuck in my head from the jump and hungry for more. The message of the track is crucial to the ALEXSUCKS ethos; despite backlash, they’ll never change. “Hate Me If You Want” is pivotal to the moment ALEXSUCKS is up against. Like a specimen in the limelight, at this stage in their career, the band is facing questions of image, what market they fall into, and what they should sound like to maximize appeal. “Hate Me If You Want” is the perfect response to all of it, solidifying ALEXSUCKS’ chokehold on a burgeoning alternative resurgence.

“Hate Me If You Want” satisfies all the cravings of a nostalgic indie kid. Grueling bass lines collide with tense riffs, dynamic percussion, and a self-assured vocal from lead singer Alex Alvarez. He sings, “You’ll always be wrong when you argue with me.” The track feeds into an excessive ego within us all that you can’t deny feels good. ALEXSUCKS is committed to helping us embrace that side of ourselves rather than tune it out completely.

ALEXSUCKS is pushing the envelope on their latest release, giving them the stamina to maintain their hot streak as a rising force in alt-rock. “Hate Me If You Want” gives us new insight into the band's philosophy and how they converse with critics. While they’d willingly embrace you if you resonated with their music, they really don’t care if you hate them at all. In fact, they’re using it at this very moment to fuel their next hit.
