Alice Phoebe Lou Surrenders to Love in “You and I”

Alice Phoebe Lou is no stranger to releasing music. The South African-born, Germany-based 31 year old has been releasing music since 2014 and has five albums under her belt. That doesn’t mean she isn’t trying new things. Her latest single, “You and I," marks her first foray into self-produced music.

“‘You and I’ speaks of longing and surrendering in love, it’s a confession and a prayer, a declaration that this is where we are and want to be and let’s stop holding back and dive deeper into everything together,” Lou shared. “It asks the other to let go of what has happened before and to be here now and dream up the future together. It’s about telling one another what our needs are so we can be there for each other in a deeper, more fundamental way.”

Lou keeps her lyrics simple and straightforward, making her feelings and intentions crystal clear to her partner. Guitars, alongside light synth and keys, accompany Lou’s rich, emotional vocals, allowing the passion she feels to shine. While Lou's feelings are obvious, they are expressed in a

tender manner, almost as though she doesn’t want to overwhelm her partners with how she’s feeling. The instrumentation is a tribute to Lou’s day busking in Berlin, where it was just her, her voice, and her guitar creating music for passersby.

“It was important to share my heart in this playful, gentle, vulnerable way that isn’t striving for perfection. That helped me focus on the song and what it needed,” Lou explained. “Being so open is painful and it’s beautiful, and helps you be grateful for where you are and where you’re going.”’

This past week Lou played three sold out shows in Los Angeles, and opened for Remi Wolf at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater. Later this month she will embark on her headline European tour.
