Audrey Mika Returns to Soundtrack Our Summer With “satuRday”

“I don’t care, pinky’s up, turn the weekend into a whole month.”

After a two-year hiatus, bedroom pop artist Audrey Mika has returned to the scene with “satuRday,” a glittering tune to accompany your summer Saturdays out in the sun. Trading in her trademark toy microphone for a silver wig and shiny blue stars, the new “Audrey Mika” is here, and (according to Instagram), she doesn’t plan on abandoning us any time soon.

One of my favorite parts about “satuRday” is its colorful introduction: a melodic xylophone, chirping birds, and orchestral strings create a calming yet cinematic ambiance reminiscent of the Flower Boy era of 2018. We are wearing Dickies and checkered vans, we are obsessed with sunflowers, we are listening to the SATURATION trilogy, and we are buying tickets to Camp Flog Gnaw because Kids See Ghosts are headlining. After a twenty-second trip down memory lane, the swirling of sounds leads us into the bouncy beat that drives “satuRday” and in enters the vocals of Audrey Mika 2.0.

Have you ever spoken with someone on the phone and you can hear a smile in their voice? That’s the closest I can describe listening to Mika’s vocals in “satuRday;” she’s having fun, and we can tell. In the first verse, Mika builds the playful world of “satuRday” by listing off a few essentials: outside, pjs on, puppy shoes, lashes done. In a chorus you can’t help but sing along to, Mika sings, “Gimme that good good saturday shit / Cherry on top in the cup cool whip / Whatever you want we can do that bitch / So cmon cmon yuh.” The title of the song says it all: “satuRday” makes you want to close your laptop, put on a cute fit, and lay down in the grass without a care in the world.

In the music video for “satuRday,” directed by Ernie Perez and Dominik Vaughan, Mika takes us inside her brain, and it’s nothing short of a fantasy land that I wouldn’t mind staying in for a weekend or two. Filming in front of a white backdrop, Mika paints the blank canvas in the only way she knows how. There’s bubbles, there’s puppies, and there’s balloons. What more could you ask for?

Take this as your sign to ditch your computer, go outside in your pjs, and soak up the sun as if it were your last Saturday.
