Audrey Nuna Delivers an Otherworldy Hit in "Suckin Up"

Rap visionary and indie staple Audrey Nuna returns with her latest single, “Suckin Up,” and this time, she's accompanied by a music video to die for.

The beat is a satisfying Y2K patchwork of reverse scrubbing and record scratches paired with echoing pings of percussion. There’s personality already woven into the crisp collection of sounds, which lays the groundwork for Nuna’s unparalleled vocal delivery to come. She starts in a half-sung, half-spoken drawl tugging at the tension on certain words with infectious attitude. Her flow locks in with the beat, adding her own rhythmic route to the structure.

When the chorus drops, Nuna shifts into an ethereal space as electric piano chords echo under cascading synth melodies. Her voice drips in artfully intense autotune, digitizing the ghostly sounds. “Suckin Up” continues to unfold, each new section climbing up another notch of complexity. By the song’s close, listeners have gone from a cleverly skeletal soundscape to a mosaic of electronic tones and interlocking percussion.

The release of “Suckin Up” is accompanied by a standout music video that only furthers Nuna’s stylistic prowess. Donning multicolored toothcaps, she pivots between tossing playful grins at the camera and shooting daggers with a pointed pose. The settings mirror her approach, cutting between rhythmic city scenes and dramatic shots of Nuna in a futuristic spectacle. In a gleaming chair constructed of every weapon under the sun, an umbrella, and a French horn, Nuna sings in an ice-white outfit. It’s video game-esque and striking, paired perfectly with the mild contrast shots.

Consistently singular, Nuna can be trusted to pave her own lane of genre-defying pop and rap, and “Suckin Up” only furthers her determined stroke of musical ingenuity.
