Debbii Dawson Crafts a Vintage Pop Earworm in "Walla Walla"

Debbii Dawson continues to blossom in her new standout single, “Walla Walla.” The track follows the release of this year’s sophomore EP release, How To Be Human, and expands upon its themes. In “Walla Walla,” Dawson completely leans into the sounds of the ‘50s and '60s, which is complimented exquisitely by her striking voice. Her songwriting shines in a new light, crafting an atmosphere that perfectly personifies the theme of the track—feeling misunderstood.

“Walla Walla” has everything it needs to achieve perfection—catchy melodies, honest storytelling, and a cheeky spirit. Dawson has often written about feeling as if she’s on the outside looking in, but in this upbeat confessional, she embodies that entirely (in fewer words than you may think.)

The specific lyricism evokes nostalgia and the stripped-back clapping beat evokes feelings of childhood nostalgia. It’s clear Dawson’s feelings are not new, but something she’s been dealing with her whole life. She sings about not being heard and seen, so much so that she questions even sharing at all. In the memorable, nonsensical chorus, Dawson’s words lose meaning, while holding more significance than the verses.

“Walla Walla” toes a perfect line between humorous and melancholy, an essential addition to the dancing through your tears genre. We keep saying it, but Dawson is truly the definition of One To Watch. From her naturally radiant voice to her ability to craft deeply personal pop masterpieces, it’s only a matter of time until everyone knows her name. The rising star just came off of touring with Orville Peck and Suki Waterhouse and next year will join Role Model for support on his 2025 North American dates. It’s sure to be a huge year for Debbii Dawson and we can’t wait to watch it all unfold.
