Delilah Montagu Opts For a Tender Moment of Reflection in “Coffee”

You would think winning a GRAMMY would be enough to catapult an artist into stardom, but that wasn't the case for UK artist Delilah Montagu. Despite taking home a GRAMMY with David Guetta and Black Coffee for their song “Drive” back in 2019, it wasn’t until the summer of 2022 that she finally started earning her much-deserved flowers. This breakout was due to artist Fred Again..’s album Actual Life 3, featuring the track “Delilah (pull me out of this).” Titled after Montagu and sampling her song “Lost Keys,” this track rapidly became a huge success. But as beloved as the track had become, it was Montagus' story of struggling with anxiety behind the sample that struck a chord with listeners.

Fast forward two years later, and it's time for Montagu to grab her own spotlight. Her latest single, “Coffee,” departs from the upbeat dancehall features. Instead, we are gifted a stripped-down song about love, allowing her to highlight the range in her voice. Her singing and vocalizations are effortless and so soft. But as light and airy as her voice sounds, there is also a fullness as it flows through your speakers. The track is catchy in its simplicity, with a chorus that begs you to sing along. As the music continues to pour over you, you almost feel lighter, as if you are experiencing the same euphoria she is singing about. As is with all her music, Montagu magically conveys emotions simply with the tone of her voice.

Montagus’ fanbase continues to grow with each new release, largely thanks to her authenticity. She admits, “I use songwriting to figure out how I feel about a particular situation.” She shows no signs of stopping, with another single coming later this month, and aims to stay true to herself and never shy away from speaking her truth through music. This time around, we are wholeheartedly paying attention.
