Emei Makes Self-Sabotage Sound Irresistible in "Cynical"

Viral alt-pop singer-songwriter Emei is back with another candid banger in "Cynical." The incredibly addictive track serves as the title track of her highly anticipated upcoming EP and sees the artist continue to push the lines of what pop can be with her bold sounds and dramatic flair. This undeniable anthem delves into Emei's constant need to self-sabotage any semblance of peace and her need for self-inflicted disasters.

"Cynical" is a refreshing, hard-hitting, edgy pop anthem featuring kaleidoscopic synths and hooky melodies. A vibrant and intense chorus entices listeners with gritty and liberating rock-drenched landscapes. Emei opens up about her need to destroy tranquility in her life, using an autobiographical narrative that highlights the highly relatable sentiment of only feeling safe when things are in chaos. She sings, "Things are in their place / all kept in a row / soon as they feel safe / I get bored / why do I have to be so / cynical."

The accompanying music video, directed by Aser Santos, is a cinematic and striking Tim Burton-inspired affair with fast-paced cuts and moody blue hues. As Emei paces around her tidy home, she eventually gives into her inner desires and starts pushing over the furniture and tearing down the curtains.

Since first releasing music in 2021, Chinese-American singer-songwriter Emei has taken the world by storm with her authentic and raw storytelling, charismatic vocal delivery, and infectious alt-pop releases. Emei is set to embark on her first tour to celebrate the EP's release this fall. The journey will kick off in Toronto on November 2 before weaving in and out of major cities across the US and ending in LA at Moroccan Lounge on November 18.
