Emma Ogier Tackles Life Head-On in Sophomore Single "Consider Me a Winner"

Singer-songwriter Emma Ogier may be a newcomer, but already has good reason to be considered a winner. From duetting with Maggie Rogers on TikTok to her debut single amassing over 100K+ streams in just 10 days, Ogier is diving into her own lane head first. Her unique sound blends folk, country, and indie pop, coming together to create something simultaneously recognizable and fresh. In “Consider Me A Winner,” her second song ever released, Ogier channels her deepest fears into one important goal: making it through the inevitable journey of change.

“Consider Me A Winner” is about being forced to lean on yourself. Ogier sings about a boy from Carolina (with a satisfying twang that almost changes the pronunciation completely) who used to be there to encourage her to speak up. Now on her own, she tries to replace his influence by buying flowers and pretending they’re from him, but “they wilted by the windowsill / the faucets drying up.” Instead of replacing people in her life, Ogier realizes she must recognize her own power. As she sings about these scary but important realizations, the upbeat instrumental brings the story forward, proving that she will make it through.

In the chorus, Ogier pats her future self on the back for making it through a transitional time. It’s an extremely mature thought process for someone barely starting their 20s and one relevant for listeners of all ages, serving as an important mantra for when life gets chaotic. The lyrical content, paired with energetic production and Ogier’s endearing country twang, is successful in conjuring a sense of purpose and the strength to carry on.

“Consider Me A Winner” is a compelling and thought-provoking track for someone just starting their musical journey. Ogier not only has a beautiful voice and an impressive capacity for storytelling, she has a point of view and expresses it effectively. With context from the songwriter, this fully self-written track is “how I imagined the semester might be without my best friend and former roommate, when in reality it was far from lonely.” “Consider Me A Winner” is a snapshot of how scary it can feel to face life head-on compared to how the situation actually plays out. Isn’t that always how it goes? And if this sophomore effort is any indication, there’s no telling how Ogier's songwriting will grow as she continues to experience the oddities of life.
