Gamilaraay Musician Loren Ryan finds her sound through her heart.

Loren Ryan is a proud Gamilaraay woman hailing from Tamworth in north-east New South Wales - a region known for its celebration of country music. Growing up inspired by artists like Beyoncé, Loren developed a strong musical identity rooted in powerful vocals and storytelling. She blends her love of R&B, hip-hop and country with her passion for her culture in the creation of her sound - modern-acoustic grassroots with both R&B and country influence.

Alongside writing original music, she also reimagines classic Australian songs in her native language, including Cold Chisel’s iconic ‘Flame Trees’ - using her platform to celebrate and preserve culture. She’s also had the opportunity to share the stage with incredible artists like Troy Cassar-Daley, Jessica Mauboy, Kelly Rowland and has toured with Australian hip-hop MC and producer URTHBOY.

Her passion also led her to get involved in the Indigenous Lullabies Project alongside Emily Wurramurra and Emma Donovan. As a result, she released ‘Songs for Charlie’ through ABC Music - a children’s album featuring classic songs like ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and original songs like ‘Charlie’s Lullaby’ that alternate between lyrics performed in Indigenous languages and English. Her work on this project also led to an appearance on the iconic ABC children’s program, ‘Play School’.

In 2024 Loren released her first EP ‘Homecoming’, featuring five anthems that feel empowering and motivating for the listener. Kicking things off with a bang is ‘Bounce Back’, an encouraging reminder of self-belief and resilience - with impressive vocals and an energetic beat. The track ‘Take Me Home’ is an emotional and romantic power ballad about longing for home - whether it’s a place or a person. Also featuring a duet with Nathan Lamont on ‘My Favourite Summer’ and the heartfelt account ‘Human’, the EP gives a holistic insight into who Loren is.

However, the song off the EP that is closest to Loren’s heart is “Suddenly’. Co-wrote with Gavin Carfoot and Melanie Dyer; the song touches on her relationship with her daughter, Charlie, and the bittersweet reality of watching her grow up. On this, she says:

It's close to my heart because for a long time I was raising her by myself and I really didn't start to push in the music industry or believe in myself when it comes to music until after I had her. And so the lyrics go, ‘no matter how tall you get, no matter how much you grow, you'll always be my baby and I just want you to know”.

Not only is the track an incredibly moving tribute to her daughter, but it also demonstrates the duality of Loren’s music - one moment she’s delivering tear-jerking ballads, the next you're screaming her lyrics in the car. There is no in between.

‘Suddenly’ also supported Loren’s 2024 win as Toyota’s Star Maker, Australia’s longest-running and most prestigious search for a country music star. In winning the title, she’s joined a list of impressive alumni, featuring artists like Keith Urban and Kaylee Bell. Since then, she’s performed at Victoria’s St Kilda Festival, The Saltwater Freshwater Festival, Hat’s Off to Country festival and even a trip overseas to the 50th Country Music Awards Fest in Nashville to perform on the Spotlight Stage.

Her latest singles ‘WHERE YOU BEEN’ and ‘BOUNTY’ are already some of her best performing yet, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Loren. With strong vocals, playful and profound lyrics, Loren is very quickly cementing herself in the Australian Music Scene as a rising star.
