h3nce's EP 'WRITE IT ON YOUR FLAGS' Exists Where Longing Meets Grit

I always loved Berlin, a city that was the epicenter of hatred in the mid 20th century. At that point, it was split into two ideological personalities, then leveled and rebuilt in complete contrast to everything previous, which is a great metaphor for h3nce, an artist seemingly building through destruction. Native to this new DIY discord sound, he paralyzes with a distorted energy that drips in choral approachability before breaking away into sonic chaos again. Wanting to know so much more about his recently released EP, WRITE IT ON YOUR FLAGS, we asked the artist himself to pen us a description of each excellent song:
"SUNLIGHT HITS YOUR FACE"
h3nce: I wrote this song from the perspective of an ecstasy trip leaving someone’s body, showing them that as soon as the night ends, the high will be over - and they won’t be able to live their life because of the comedown they’ll experience.
"USHANKA"
Two years ago, at the very beginning of h3nce, I came home from a weekend away and told my mom, “I’m going to write a song now.” An hour later, after I poured my soul and every bad feeling ever into the mic, Ushanka was born. Earlier this year I decided to reproduce the whole song, keeping the vocals as they were but producing the beat again - this time actually knowing what I’m doing lol.
"LAST PLACE"
You love someone and give them all you’ve got? Well, if you don’t get anything in return, then you know the feeling this is about. You got put in last place.
"2MUCH ON MY MIND"
Last year was insane for me - from making music alone in my room to talking to major labels in LA. Back at home, I had the feeling of losing some of my friends to addiction. Both worlds clashed. I was alone at home for two days, didn’t leave my room, and this eerie post–hyperpop song was born.
"TALK BOY"
TALK BOY is about someone close to you struggling with multiple addictions, hiding it from everyone and dealing with it in secret. That moment when you realize somebody you love is destroying themselves without telling you is devastating - frustrating, powerless, and maddening. The song captures that urge to break through the silence and just shout: “TALK BOY, you wanna talk boy, just say what’s up.”
"FEEL IT AT ALL"
This one is a weird mix of genres - strings, organ, trap drums, and a bass guitar. I still don’t know how I thought of that instrumentation. The hyperpop ending pays homage to the beginning of my music in the hyperpop scene though!
