Indie Delight Daffo Delivers a Despondent Holiday Tune with “Winter Hat”

For most people, the holiday season brings tidings and good cheer (or whatever they say), but for some, the holidays bite like the cold winter air. Indie singer-songwriter Gabi Gamberg, otherwise known as Daffo, understands this well.

“Winter Hat” is Daffo’s latest single and a fitting addition to their discography. Unlike most holiday tunes, “Winter Hat” makes no mention of a jolly St. Nick, no inkling of magic, and not even a whisper of fa-la-la. Instead, the Brooklyn-based artist sings of pitching up a dead tree and the overall inevitable feeling of sadness that not even a cozy winter hat can protect you from. Despite the sadness, comfort does come courtesy of Philip Weinrobe’s sweet production and recording, done at his Sugar Mountain studio. A crunchy gurgling guitar complements the off kilter drums under Gamberg’s toasty and roomy vocals.

The track is Daffo’s fourth single of the year, following “Get a Life,” and “Good God” and “Poor Madeline” remix collaborations with Porches and Searows respectively. If the holiday season brings another Daffo single, perhaps the new year brings another Daffo album. Cheers to hoping that’s true and that the cold bites a little less harshly this winter.
