Isaac Dunbar Isn’t Willing to Settle For Second Best in “Backseat Girl”

Rising pop phenom Isaac Dunbar is taking the year by storm with his second release, a melodramatic ‘70’s-inspired ballad titled “Backseat Girl.” At just 20 years old, Dunbar possesses a rare quality found in stars of the past and in this new track, he puts it to the test. Paired with a simple yet captivating music video that sees the rising star lamenting about his place in the metaphorical backseat, Dunbar’s passion for his craft shines in this standout single.

An acoustic guitar sets the backdrop for his luscious vocals and fierce lyrical storytelling, invoking a sentimental side of his extravagant musical persona. Theatricality in pop music is usually hit or miss, but for Dunbar, it’s ingrained in every facet of his artistry. “Backseat Girl” brings that flair to a folk-pop smash, full of dramatic belts and classic production choices, which result in a recipe for greatness.

The single tells a heartbreakingly familiar story of always feeling second best, a beautiful metaphor painted by the title. Dunbar pours his heart out as he begs to be seen as more than just the “Backseat Girl,” wanting to be fully celebrated in the forefront instead of settling for the shadows. The only thing more powerful than his sadness is his desire to be put first, portrayed in the stunning bridge where the young artist shows off his vocal chops. The belts feel carnal, a true need to be seen as he bellows, “Bang the door down man! Let me in!”

From “Apartment A” to “Backseat Girl,” it’s clear that working within the boundaries of genre is not how Dunbar was destined to create. His music thrives in the expansive amount of incorporated styles, proving that he can do just about anything. Elements of musical theater, acoustic guitar, pure pop, vintage stardom, and more, come together to create one of the most exciting rising pop stars of the moment.
