10 Questions WIth Izzy Spears on His New Single "BAD NEWS”

For a brand new artist, Izzy Spears lands a heavy first impression. Much like a "FIST," his debut single felt like a creative arbitrage, pummeling styles into a paragon of creativity. And with the release of his sophomore single "BAD NEWS," we didn't want to gauge this immense personality at a distance, so we got into the interview ring to hear the hits for ourselves.

Ones To Watch: Who is Izzy Spears?

Izzy Spears: Come up with your own interpretation. Look at me, Listen to me, and place me where you want me. I don’t wanna give it all away too soon.

What is "BAD NEWS" all about?

"BAD NEWS" is about being in love with something or someone that’s completely wrong/bad for you. Knowingly submitting to something that ultimately ruins you in the end. A toxic relationship that most people can relate to.

As a new artist, how’d you’d settle on your sound? Your look?

I think mostly I just didn’t want to be categorized as a rapper and thrown into that oversaturated genre. I grew up with a very large family so there were so many different types of music being played. I had a lot of different influences. I listened to a lot of punk music in high school and it stuck with me. I like to believe my music is a melting pot of all the different genres I grew up listening to. As far as my look goes, I always just want to look like what my 13-year-old self would think is cool. I'm just always tryna impress my younger self.

Any important collaborators? Who produced the track?

My main producer and best friend Duskdriven started the foundation for every track on the EP. Nick Weiss, Yves Tumor, Nation, and Pablo Melendez all played significant roles in the record but Duskdriven laid all the groundwork and skeleton of each track.

What has most influenced your sound and vibe to date?

My friends. I'm surrounded by hella amazing talented artists. We always challenge each other. Yves Tumor, Duskdriven, Evanora Unlimited, Nation, BabyMorocco, Couturexoxo.

Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?

I'm releasing an EP later this year where I think everyone will get a taste of a bunch of brand-new flavors I got. But there will be more of this sound for sure. I wanted to share a more vulnerable side of myself with this project but you still get the Izzy you already know. I got range lol

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

I got a few things coming up. Shows, magazine covers, short films. I'm not stopping anytime soon. If you can imagine it, you’ll see me tearing it in every realm of entertainment.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Definitely film and fashion. I've been obsessed with Greg Araki and the world he created with films like Doom Generation, Nowhere, and Mysterious Skin. I'm really interested in creating a world of my own. Don’t think I’m ready to create my own clothing line or anything, but I’ve been getting experimental with clothes and costumes on stage. It's hella fun to create a new version of Izzy Spears for every show.

Any trends you currently love or loathe?

I don’t really keep up with trends. Might be a bad thing could be a good thing but I’m in my own little bubble. I watch my own moves.

Who are your current Ones To Watch?

Hella inspired by Yves Tumor I think he’s authentic and making all the right moves to be a legend. Also Duskdriven, Evanora Unlimited, Nation, BabyMorocco, Couturexoxo. The gang's all going up.
