Emerging indie-pop artist kate the dreamer is back with her third release of 2022, two complementary tracks that represent an intimate breakthrough within one’s self. In “Plastic Heart (Pt. 1 & 2),” we embark on a sonic journey of self-sabotage that ultimately ends up in a place of peace. The first track details past toxic moments as the second accompanies those feelings with a beautiful fully instrumental moment, representing kate the dreamer finally setting her feelings free.

The track starts with a hypnotizing guitar pluck, as kate the dreamer begins to detail moments from her past. She sings of vying for attention from the wrong people and feeling insecure. The first sonic switch-up happens quickly, with a stop-and-go rhythm paired with kate’s vulnerable memories of not feeling valued by past lovers.

As soon as listeners get comfortable with the sound of the track, it switches into a crazy, fuzzy juncture that represents a metamorphosis in kate the dreamer’s life. All this time she’s been putting herself out there for the wrong people on purpose and this sonic breakthrough represents a shift in self-worth. After the messiness, the track switches up one last time into a lullaby-like sound as kate sings her heart out with raw lyrics like, “You’re not gonna save me / I don’t need your bravery.”

That’s not where this journey ends, though. “Plastic Heart Pt. 2” serves as a completely ethereal outro bookmarked by a gorgeous buildup that feels like a release of all the emotions discussed in part one. It’s unique that an artist includes a second track with a single release, especially one that is all sonics and vocalizations with no lyrics. Although she’s not speaking words, kate the dreamer’s emotions in part two could not be more clear. She’s finally living at peace with her emotions.
