Kevin Atwater Puts His Spin on Troye Sivan’s “My My My!”

Kevin Atwater has been capturing fans’ hearts with his raw and intimate lyrics detailing his queer expereince since he first started posting his music on TikTok in 2022. Earlier this year, Atwater released his debut album Achilles, and travelled across the US on The Achilles Tour. Now, he is paying tribute to one of the iconic male queer artists that came before him, Troye Sivan, with a cover of the Australian’s “My My My!” from his 2018 album Bloom.

Sivan’s original is full of confidence and swagger. It feels like a summer night at the club with its synths, keyboards, and driving dance beats. Atwater’s cover features his signature gentle, stripped back production, transforming the song into something entirely his own, while still honoring the original material. In Atwater’s version, the lyrics feel like a confession, as if he’s giving in to his feelings for the first time, while also trying to convince his lover that they too should give in to their feelings.

With his soft, floating vocals, Atwater’s version tenderly peels back the layers of desire that he is feeling. The first verse feels slightly reserved, even as feelings are confessed with Atwater singing “Cause passion is passion / You know it just as well as me.” In the second verse, drums join Atwater’s vocals as he sings “Spark up, buzz cut / I got my tongue between your teeth / Go slow, no, no, go fast / You like it just as much as me.” Atwater hasn’t changed Sivan’s lyrics, but his production choices creates a different feel to the song. Even with it’s unique production, Atwater’s cover perfectly captures the celebratory feelings of freedom and sexuality found in the original.
