10 Questions With Krooked Kings on Their Latest Album 'Shiver' [Q&A]

We’ve been stans of Krooked Kings since we were trying to dig out a perfect song for a perfect moment, and this band fit the bill oh so perfectly. You’ll find that's often the case with this Utah five-piece and with the release of their third album Shiver the band keeps on delivering the melodic, indie guitar-laden riffs, and vivacious vocals of their past work but better. Wanting to know more about this stellar band, we reached out to see where the compass was pointing.

Ones To Watch: Who are the Krooked Kings?

Krooked Kings: Oli Martin (Vocals), Paul Colgan (Guitar), David Macey (Keys), Matt Monosson (Bass), & Quinn Casper (Drums).

What is Shiver all about?

It’s about dealing with different ghosts in our life. Whether past or present we spent time writing and analyzing our relationships within ourselves and memories and facing these “ghosts.”

How’d this album come together, did you have a theme or vision going into it?

Originally, we had an EP that when we finished we all thought that we could keep writing. The EP was also a hodgepodge of themes, and I think we all liked writing around a theme line like we tried to follow with Shiver

Any collaborations or features? Who produced the album?

We worked with Jackson Phillips (Daywave) to produce at his home studio in LA. Since he did our last record as well it felt like we were building from where we left off instead of starting from scratch which I feel is reflective in the record.

How do you feel your sound has evolved or changed since The Comedown

Being all relatively new musicians at the time of The Comedown, I think our skills and writing styles evolve as we’ve continued to record. I’m always finding new music that excites me and I think that influence affects the music a lot & I feel the same way about the rest of the band.

Can we expect more of this style in the future? Or are you constantly evolving?

I think you’ll always be able to tell when you’re listening to a Krooked Kings song, but I think we’re open to different styles too. We don’t have any deliberate plans to change drastically though.

Besides this excellent album, what else should we be on the lookout for?

We’re heading on a tour at the beginning of April around the Midwest and West Coast and would love to see y’all there!

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Admittedly I am no bookworm, but I do aspire to be. I think writing music has made me appreciate writing in any medium much more and reading gives me a look into a specific person's writing style which I love.

Food or drink best suited to going down the rabbit hole of your work?

Maybe a couple cold beers accompanied by a chill night.

Who are your OnesToWatch?

We would have to say Lola Young, Friko, and Wunderhorse come to the top of mind.
