late night drive home's Album "as i watch my life online" Is Poignant Indie Rock Mastery
late night drive home, born in a small town outside of El Paso, and Chaparral, New Mexico have cultivated a timeless eccentricity found since the genesis of modern indie rock (think The Strokes in their heyday, or early Cage The Elephant) all while maintaining a sound that is inherently theirs, and a debut album that is shakingly relevant. as i watch my life online is beyond a typical successor to their breakout hit, “Stress Relief” and led to a slew of festival slots including Coachella, Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits and Kilby Block Party.
as i watch my life online is a reflection of living in the shadow of a world consumed by the internet, delivered in poignant vignettes that review topics such as online dating and addictive vices that lurk just beyond the screen.
With a brash, brutally honest eponymous track to open the project, late night drive home’s curation of the project is artfully chosen across tracks such as “she came for a sweet time” and “terabyte” which are a testament to the heart of the project, identifying yourself in the ins and outs of the web, with romance intertwined in it all as well, because why wouldn’t it?
“she came for a sweet time”, the second track of the project, is a effortless, colliding guitar and bass heavy, anthemic look at the intersecting aspects of casual dating, posting on social media and how easy it is to lose yourself in the intoxicating nature of the world at your fingertips. With a headbanging bassline, the track’s closing is a foreboding comedown that begs the listener to look within. “She came to me for a sweet time//Even though the distractions just caused reflections//That our reality starts to meet in connections.”
“Terabyte” is one of the final tracks on the project, with a surreal video to accompany directed by Harley Astorga, “terabyte” is a fever dream where late night drive home exceeds expectations on a track that is as whimsical as it is a cry of despair. Musing on the addictive nature of instant gratification on the internet, and the pitfalls show how easy it is to be susceptible to the cycle that can consume you fully without realizing it.
