Lulu Simon Pens a Tender Piece of Hopeful Heartbreak in "Feel Better"

Sentimental singer-songwriter Lulu Simon wears her heart on her sleeve in her second single of 2024, the poignant pop confessional “Feel Better.” It’s the perfect track for the fading nights of August, where introspection is triggered by the comedown of summer bliss. “Feel Better” describes the aftermath of the end of a relationship, where Simon asks questions that stem from insecurity and self-doubt.

Vulnerability is at the forefront of Simon’s artistry and “Feel Better” showcases her pen at its most impactful. The track opens with a guitar scratch over a dreamy synth beat and a gut-punching lyric as Simon sings with delicate vocals, “Did I ruin your life by loving you?” It’s abundantly clear that this breakup left her with self-doubt and she’s ready to get it off her chest to start the healing process. The juxtaposition of the ethereal production and heavy lyrics of “Feel Better” create a melancholy fairy tale, filled with as much hope as wistfulness.

The resentment built from a dying relationship is felt from the beginning of “Feel Better” and the tension is released as the track progresses. Its second verse adds dimension to the intense emotion, with an extra groove that drives the track forward. Simon dreams of a future where she’s fully moved on, hoping the pain will be worth it some day. From the optimistic production to the honest lyrics, “Feel Better” embodies the breeziness of early 2000s folk pop with a glittery twist.

Ending with a lovely classic fade out, “Feel Better” does just that for both the artist and the listener. The airy nature of the track manifests lighter emotional baggage, a comforting purge of darkness in this perfect pop package. Lulu Simon’s honesty is what makes her music special and her storytelling star keeps rising.
