Madden Metcalf Shrugs Off An Indifferent Love Affair In ‘Ain’t Mad About It’

Ever found yourself making the same bad decision, over and over? Country artist Madden Metcalf knows the feeling. On new single “Ain’t Mad About It,” he perfectly describes how it feels to keep going back to someone you know you shouldn’t.

Metcalf dropped debut EP Saltwater Southern earlier this year, creating buzz with his updated country sound. New single “Ain’t Mad About It” continues that sound, with pop-rock production elements paired with confessional country songwriting.

“By now, I should probably hate you,” the 20 year-old sings over a twangy guitar line, instantly setting the scene for the track. With production that brings to mind country acts like Florida Georgia Line and Sam Hunt, Metcalf spins a story about someone who keeps coming back around.

“Take your lonely out on me,” he tells his on-again-off-again lover, admitting that, even with all the back and forth of a relationship he calls “a heartbreak record on repeat, “I ain’t mad about it.”

Speaking about "Ain't Mad About It,” Metcalf shared, “This song is about knowing somebody’s no good for you, but still picking up when they call. You tell yourself you’re done, and then she’s at your door, and you forget whatever speech you had planned. It’s a bad idea, but in that moment it feels pretty damn good.”

The song’s brash production contrasts with the vulnerability of the lyrics; while Metcalf shrugs off his partner’s indifference to his feelings, there’s an underlying current of sadness that runs through the song, creating an interesting dissonance between music and lyrics.

“Ain’t Mad About It” is a great continuation of Metcalf’s sound, showcasing vulnerable songwriting in the tradition of some of country’s greats, with a fresh production style that will stick in your head long after the song is over.
