Maisie Peters Officially Enters Her Rockstar Era With "Not Another Rockstar"

“Aren't I lucky 'cause he could have chosen any girl to fuck with? And he chose me, so I guess I should be grateful.”

Sometimes, the red flags start to wave and we simply choose to be colorblind. We convince ourselves that we can be the ones who can change them, when in reality, we’re just setting ourselves up for self-sabotage, or in Maisie Peters' case, a banger of a tune and world tour. In Peters' latest single, "Not Another Rockstar," the UK singer-songwriter lets us in on a situationship with a walking red flag in the form of hand-me-down jewels, ripped jeans, and the ever-so-slightest bit of self-obsessiveness. Under the dirty blonde hair, he’s just another below-average boy with daddy issues.

With every release this year, Peters has been making her debut into her girlboss rockstar era and "Not Another Rockstar" has officially sealed the deal. From the whimsical pop-rock earworm that is "Cate’s Brother" to the delicately, angst-ridden "Blonde," Peters is not afraid to experiment with her sound. She simply does not rest, releasing bop after bop, and "Not Another Rockstar" is no exception. Between distorted vocals, punchy electric guitars, and heart-palpitating rhythms, Peters teleports us back to the early 2000s days of Avril Lavigne, Hot Topic, plaid skirts with ties, and we are completely, entirely here for it.

"Not Another Rockstar" is for the girlies who have fallen victim to the softboy epidemic and if you, too, have been personally affected by one you may be entitled to compensation. If there’s one lyric that’ll take you back to the dark days, let it be “Talk about me, make it all about you.” In each verse, Peters writes with a level of self-awareness that almost feels like a FaceTime call with a best friend. She isn’t afraid to let the world in on her decisions and in the dating world, no matter how questionable they might seem. In the pre-chorus, she sings, “Funny I could pick 'em in a lineup, line up, Pretty certain I could do it with my eyes shut, eyes shut, A little self-obsеssive and I sign up, sign up.”

In ‘‘Not Another Rockstar" Peters pokes fun at her track record, ultimately concluding that all there is to do is look back and laugh at it (and write bangers about it and go on tour and be objectively cooler than he ever will be). It’s relatable, it’s a bit silly, and it’s catchy as hell.

Take this as your warning: "Not Another Rockstar" is addictive, and you will be craving more the second it ends.
